The painting depicts Bill in familiar pose as Tottenham manager in front of the old West Stand, and also shows him in his playing days for Spurs.

Bill joined Spurs as a player in 1936 and during his playing career was a vital part of the 1950-51 Championship winning side. He won his one and only cap for England in 1951, scoring against Portugal at Goodison Park within the first 30 seconds in a 5-2 victory.

He joined the Spurs coaching staff upon his retirement as a player, and in 1958 was appointed manager of the club. This was to mark a period of great success for Spurs, as they became the first team in the 20th century to win the League and Cup double in 1960-61. This was followed by another FA Cup success in 1962, and the European Cup-Winners Cup in 1963, the first British club to win a European trophy. Further trophies followed; another FA Cup win in 1967, two League Cup triumphs in 1971 and 1973, with a UEFA Cup win in 1972.

Bill retired as manager in 1974 after sixteen successful years in charge. In 1976 he was employed as a consultant, giving many of his successors the benefit of his knowledge and experience. In 1991 he was appointed as the club’s President.

Bill continued to attend every match that his beloved Tottenham Hotspur played at White Hart Lane until shortly before he passed away on 23rd October 2004, aged 85.
